The first step for using an AED is to turn it on. Follow the directions that the AED gives. Apply the AED pads to the patient, one in the center of the chest and one in the center of the back. Do not touch the patient while the AED analyzes. If a shock is advised the AED will charge and allow for the shock to be delivered. After a shock is delivered, begin CPR for about 5 cycles or two minutes. The AED will reanalyze every 2 minutes. Continue CPR and follow the AED's instructions until advanced life support arrives.
